Another church I would regularly see when my parents and I went shopping - I remember driving down the high street seeing the tower get closer and closer.

EN: the Église St Sauveur in the town of Locminé (Breton: Logunec'h, meaning 'place of the monks' which is derived from the Latin 'Locus Monachorum' after the monastery founded there in 1008) is a very unusual structure, both today and originally. There has been a church here since the 11th century when a small priory was founded by St Gildas and his followers. Over time, this became a parish dedicated to St Sauveur (St Saviour). The Gothic church was begun in the 15th century and was a typical Breton hall church. Attached to the north side of the building was the Chapelle St Colomban, also built in the Gothic style.

The church was modified a few times over the centuries - in the 17th century, gilding and painting was undertaken, and in the 18th century a new retable was built in the choir. In 1768, two new bells were cast by Michel Guillaume of Vannes and the tower was renovated. During the French Revolution, the church was closed and stripped of its furnishings. It was reopened and reconsecrated in 1802.

The 20th century saw the church falling further and further into ruin, despite the fact it was classed as a Monument Historique. By the 1970s, the building was ruinous and dangerous. A section of the roof collapsed in 1971 and the decision was then made to demolish the building except for the west facade. Alongside the Chapelle St Colomban, the church was demolished in 1974. On Christmas Eve 1975, the curate celebrated Midnight Mass.

The west facade of the original church and chapel were conserved and form the bell tower. There are four bells - three are hung in a modernist bell tower attached to the facade of the church, and a fourth is inside the little dome turret that was the facade of the Chapelle St Colomban. FR: L’église Saint-Sauveur de la ville de Locminé (breton: Logunec’h, signifiant « le lieu des moines », dérivé du latin Locus Monachorum en référence au monastère fondé ici vers 1008) est un édifice très particulier, tant dans son aspect actuel que dans son histoire.

Une église existe à cet endroit depuis le XIᵉ siècle, époque où Saint Gildas et ses disciples y fondèrent un petit prieuré. Peu à peu, ce monastère donna naissance à une paroisse dédiée à Saint-Sauveur. L’église gothique fut commencée au XVᵉ siècle - il s’agissait d’une église bretonne typique. Sur le côté nord du bâtiment était accolée la chapelle Saint-Colomban, également construite dans le style gothique.

L’église fut modifiée à plusieurs reprises au fil des siècles : au XVIIᵉ siècle, on entreprit des dorures et des peintures - au XVIIIᵉ siècle, un nouveau retable fut érigé dans le chœur. En 1768, deux nouvelles cloches furent fondues par Michel Guillaume, fondeur à Vannes, et la tour fut restaurée. Pendant la Révolution française, l’église fut fermée et dépouillée de son mobilier. Elle fut rouverte et reconsacrée en 1802.

Au XXᵉ siècle, malgré son classement comme Monument Historique, l’église se dégrada progressivement. Dans les années 1970, le bâtiment était en ruine et dangereux - une partie de la toiture s’effondra en 1971, et la décision fut prise de démolir l’édifice, à l’exception de la façade ouest. En même temps que la chapelle Saint-Colomban, l’église fut démolie en 1974. Le 24 1975, le curé y célébra la messe de minuit dans la nouvelle édifice.

La façade ouest de l’église et de la chapelle d’origine furent conservées et constituent aujourd’hui le clocher. Il y a quatre cloches : trois sont suspendues dans un clocher moderniste attenant à la façade de l’église, et une quatrième se trouve dans la petite dôme de l’ancienne façade de la chapelle Saint-Colomban.
