Gaited vs Non Gaited Horses- Which Should You Get ? Gaited Horse Training

Gaited horses are great but they are not for everyone. You have to be open about riding a different way and learn what helps them to gait and what causes them to lose their gait. Also not all gaited horses just gait, many will trot or pace. The footing, inclines and declines and how you ride them all affect how well they will gait. They are calmer usually and not bouncy if they gait well which is very nice but many are not trained well and are pretty green.

You need to know this going in so you can make the right decision. If your not open to learning new things and want to ride as you always have with your trotty horse, then you may just want to find a smooth trotty horse. If you have no help and no idea how to ride, then you may also want to stick to an older calm trotting horse.

If you want smooth for your joints and are open to learning new things then gaited may be for you. There is a learning curve and you must understand all gaited horses are different. So best to buy the one that gaits easily vs buying for color or looks. As those may be harder to gait.

Also all gaited horses feel different so some will be smoother then others. But now at least you may understand the difference and what may work better for you.
