For our first series of tests, we checked how well this Dyson vacuum did on carpeting. We tossed flour onto the carpet and used the turbine brush to clean it up. It did a great job even up against the edge of the floor. For larger particles, we crushed up some cereal and Oreo cookies. The larger particles got kicked around, but eventually were cleaned up if we lifted the head of brush up. Pet hair was removed with ease from the carpet.

On hard flooring, take the turbine head brush off the Dyson City and use the articulating hard floor tool. This tool has harder bristles that look like teeth. The dust and debris fit through these bristles and are cleaned up nicely. We used flour to simulate fine particulates like dust, and the vacuum cleaned these up easily. It also did an excellent job on the larger particles all the way up to the edge of the flooring.

We mentioned the two main on board tools, but there are a few more for the DC26. The crevice tool is nice for tight spaces and it doubles as an upholstery brush. There is a very small stair brush, but we found that the turbine head was nicer to use when cleaning stairs.

The noise level of this vacuum is between 75 and 80 decibels. This is pretty average for a vacuum. Even though it's small, the Dyson City is still noisy. The filtration system is excellent as our laser particle scanner detected no dust. Finally the suction power is very strong at about 85 to 90 inches of water lift.

Maintenance can be a hassle with this canister vacuum. The dust bin sometimes is hard to open up, and some dust gathers and doesn't come out of the cup shaped bottom easily. There are two filters on the vacuum. One is located on the bottom of the machine, and you have to use a coin or screwdriver to access it. The other filter is hidden behind the wheel. Both of the filters have to be cleaned by washing them under water at least once a month. You have to leave the filter out to dry for 24 hours before you put them back in.
