DON'T CHASE TEST COVERAGE!

There are some common mistakes when adopting TDD. People often assume that it is all about test coverage, to the extent that they ignore what TDD is really about, which is driving the design of our code from tests by writing them first. Software testing is an important foundation of a good software engineering approach, but focusing on test coverage reports can often lead to poor outcomes. Software development is tricky, and if you chase the wrong software test metrics you can end up going slower with lower quality, rather than our goal, which is to build better software faster.

In this episode, Dave Farley explores why test coverage is a poor metric for success, how one company replaced manual testing with unit tests that gave high coverage and no protection and paid people extra to do it. Dave also describes how we can do better than that.
