BR in the 1980s - The Alan Harrison Collection Part 31 Return to Lickey, Birmingham (British Rail)

During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. In Part 29, Alan endured some atrocious weather in Worcestershire when he visited Bromsgrove and the Lickey Bank. Undeterred, he chose to return the following Saturday in order to film in more favourable conditions! Part 31 opens with a shot of a BR Blue liveried Class 47 descending the bank with a WCML Mk3 ‘Pullman’ rake. Venturing away from their usual Euston to Liverpool/Manchester business travel routes, these coaches were used briefly on Saturday’s Only (SO) services to the South West, offering the rare chance to travel in Pullman luxury in exchange for the payment of a minimal ‘Weekend First’ supplement to the train guard. Next up, 50024 Vanguard works hard to lift its 12 coaches uphill towards Barnt Green. There then follows a veritable thrash fest of 1980s traction, with Classes 31, 37, 45, 47 and 50 all represented, along with several HSTs, their Valenta engines howling. A pair of Class 31s head south with yet another Mk3 Pullman rake. This is presumably 1V49, the 0840 (SO) Liverpool Lime Street to Paignton service, which was actually booked for a pair of 31/4s from Birmingham. We see a host of Class 50s powering up and down the grade, including 50044 Exeter, 50049 Defiance, 50048 Dauntless and 50008 Thunderer. At one point, an unidentified Class 50 passes in the then new Network South East red, white and blue livery, eliciting an amusing “Innit ‘orrible?” comment from an accompanying photographer!
