Alta Via 1 | Dolomites | #9 Rifugio Vazzoler – Rifugio Carestiato | Italian Alps

This is my 9th day on Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites, Italy, from Rifugio Vazzoler to Rifugio Carestiato. I departed Rifugio Vazzoler and for a short while, walked on the dirt road along the soaring rock towers. Then, the trail branched off to wild terrain through the woods and rockslides. Walking on uneven rocks required extra attention as to where I put my foot down. The landscape is dramatic, and there is more greenery in the area. The heavy clouds had moved in. I was hurrying up to make it before it started raining or thundering. I made it to Rifugio Carestiato safely. Later, thunderstorms along with heavy rain and hail came from above the rifugio. In addition, a helicopter with a rescue team landed behind the rifugio later in the evening.
