On the 40th anniversary of the September 1973 military coup in Chile that toppled the democratically-elected government of Salvador Allende from power, Associate Professor Morley will look back at what happened during those turbulent years 1970-73, the relationship between the Nixon administration and those class and institutional forces inside Chile that was pivotal to the success of the coup, and its longer term consequences for Chile and Latin America

Speaker:
Morris Morley is Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations, Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW and a senior research fellow with the Council on Hemispheric Affairs,Washington,D.C.
He has written extensively on United States-Latin American relations with a particular focus on Cuba, Chile and Nicaragua. His is the author of Imperial State and Revolution: The United and Cuba 1952-1986 (Cambridge UP) ; Washington, Somoza and the Sandinistas: State and Regime in U.S. Policy toward Nicaragua, 1969-1981 (Cambridge UP); the co-author of Unfinished Business: America and Cuba after the Cold War (Cambridge UP), and the co-editor of Cuba, the United States and the Post-Cold War World (University. Press of Florida) . He is currently completing a study of U.S. policy toward the Pinochet dictatorship.

Musician:
Chilean born, Jorge Bontes migrated to Australia many years ago. Jorge has been performing all over Australia spreading the Chilean and Latin American music and songs. He performs songs and music by Victor Jara, a Chilean singer, composer, guitar player, play writer, political and social activist.
