The front leg side kick is one of Taekwon-Do's most effective techniques. The kick generates a lot of power, keeps the opponent at range and can be thrown quickly. The shifting/sliding/attacking side kick is a very common scoring technique in ITF sparring. Here are some tips to perfect yours 👊;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹️ Be sure to lift the attacking leg before advancing. If you step before lifting the leg or if you use a foot to foot motion to move forward, an experienced opponent will quickly close down your attempt with hands. The knee position should be between the belt and floating ribs, any higher can be easily countered by coming under, any lower can be countered by coming over.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹️ If connection to the first point, aim your heel directly at the opponent with your chamber/ready position. That way if they do advance your foot is already in position rather than your shin facing the opponent or the bottom of your foot facing the floor when you lift.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹️ To maximize the speed of your shift/slide first turn the standing foot between 120 & 180 degrees to get a faster push off the floor. This sweet spot is individual, so experiment and see what works best for you. The second part is to do with posture, the more you lean back to kick the slower you will be able to carry your weight forward. Don't lean too much to get a higher kick if your advancing forward.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹️ To maximize the distance between you and your opponent aim for the opponents hip/belt. This is the longest straight line of distance between you and your opponent as well as it is more difficult to be countered.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹️ When using a side kick, keep your front hand in front of your front shoulder as best as possible for quick advancement to hands after a side kick as well as a good defensive position for those who look to counter the side kick with hands.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹️ Kick don't flick. Sometimes the "cannon turning kick" or Yop Dollyo Chagi is used as a side kick. This kick has it's own use, but when used as a side kick it has is downfalls. The distance is reduced, the power is reduced and the angle of the kick means it can be easily countered by an experienced opponent when aimed to the body.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🔹️ Use the kick like a stabbing motion for the best return and for more safety defensively.

🔹️ Keep the front leg light on the floor, loading the leg too heavy will result in more time to left the leg. Keep your weight off the front leg to move it quicker.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
