Dangar Island is one of Sydney's most unique communities. Located in the Hawkesbury River, the only access to the island is by ferry or water taxi.

The island is car-free, besides some authorised vehicles, residents get around by walking, golf buggy or bicycle. Goods are brought to the wharf where residents will then haul them away with a wheelbarrow.

Originally inhabited by the "Guringai" indigenous Australians, the island was first explored by colonists in 1788, the same year that the colony was founded. Today the island is partially developed, sporting a population of just over 300 people who call the island home.

The island has a cafe, a post office, a bowling club, community hall, fire station and ambulance, as well as accomodation options for holiday makers.

In addition, it is it the only place in the world that you'll find a "Blackbutt-Rough-barked Apple Forest". Hundreds of species of animal also call the island home, including migratory birds that fly over 12,000 km from Alaska or Siberia.

Public access to the island is mostly by ferry, here is a link to their website that should contain the most up-to-date timetable and fares. Now that the ferry is a part of the Opal network, catching the ferry is easier than ever.

This video is mostly a cycle tour of the island, it also contains part of the ferry trip, a walk along the beautiful Dangar Beach as well as the Kiparra Park Reserve and walking track.
