Sweeping your own flue is really a very simple job and will save you around £50/flue charge by a professional sweep.
Note: Some home insurance may have more stringent restrictions e.g. thatched roofs, so it would then be prudent to use a professional sweep who will give you a certificate of proof when swept.
For everyone else you will not invalidate your home insurance with DIY sweeping. “'Standard home insurance policies ask that customers verify that their property is in a good state of repair and of good build when they apply for home insurance.”

If this is your first time sweeping a chimney flue:
Before you do anything, look at how your wood burner installation is set up for access to the chimney flue liner for sweeping. You should have an access door in the stove pipe similar to that in this video (older installations may not have one) – you can get more details on this from my article:

The key is getting all the necessary equipment ready to hand and preparing the work area so nothing gets damaged by soot dust.

Carefully follow the steps outlined in the video and you will quickly gain confidence in tackling this project with very little stress or mess.
You should sweep your flue before and after the winter season use. During the summer time when not using your wood burner make sure the air vents are fully open to allow the flue to properly breathe and prevent moisture build up on the liner.
The reason for sweeping before you start using the wood burner again is to check nothing has got into the flue and caused an obstruction e.g. bird nests etc. It will also remove any lose soot particles that have dried by the warm summer air and ensure that the liner is as clean as possible for the start of the winter season.
Good Maintenance is important for both safety and efficient running of your wood burner. Remember to inspect both (door and glass) fire ropes and all the fire bricks for wear and tear, replace if necessary before next winter.

Always check and test your approved Carbon Monoxide detector in your room is working. Older models have a replacement date stamped on the back.
Your CO detector is no use IF located in the WRONG place in the room – see the link for more details: https://www.flexichimneyrods.co.uk/co...
