Sergio "Checo" Perez expressed his surprise and dissatisfaction regarding the penalty he will have to serve at the Spanish Grand Prix, as a consequence of his accident at the Canadian Grand Prix. During the event in Montreal, Perez lost control of his car at Turn 6 due to the wet surface, crashing into the wall. Despite the damage, he returned to the garage to avoid a Safety Car, although this was ultimately necessary due to another incident on the track.

Race Direction determined that the damage to Perez's RB20 was too severe for him to continue on track, calling his decision to return to the pits irresponsible. As a result, Red Bull received a financial fine and Perez was penalized with the loss of three grid positions for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix at Montmelo.

During the Spanish Grand Prix Media Day, Perez regretted the situation but defended his actions, justifying them with confidence in his team and the limited visibility conditions he faced. "In hindsight, I wouldn't have done anything different, because I fully trust my team, what they tell me to do," said the Mexican driver.

Perez explained that during the incident in Montreal, he had no visibility in his mirrors due to the accumulated dust and dirt, and had no clear idea of the damage to his car. He compared his situation to similar incidents in the past that did not result in penalties, noting his surprise at the penalty imposed. "We're a bit surprised, but there's nothing we can do," he concluded.

This penalty adds an additional disadvantage for Perez at a critical moment in the season, where every point counts in the fight for the championship. However, his determination and confidence in his team could be key to overcoming this challenge at the Spanish Grand Prix.
