Subaru loyalists are everywhere, especially New England, but Subaru will always say they have more ground to cover. The 2016 Subaru Impreza is one compact car that, if you're in the market, is certainly worth a good look. Subaru has vastly improved the Impreza and we have five reasons it's at the top of the economy car list.
Standard All-Wheel Drive
If you know Subaru, you know all models come with standard all-wheel drive. That makes it a sure bet in places like the snow belt. But, wherever you live, you will find value in an all-wheel-drive car. Take rain, for example: The enhanced grip from AWD reassures you in a slippery situation. Also, taking twisty turns are much more fun with four wheels pulling -- take our word for it. The Impreza starts at fewer than $19,000 and you'll be hard-pressed to find another all-wheel-drive compact car for less.
Pleasant Ride and Handling
Back in the day, having all-wheel drive also meant a stiffer ride, but not anymore. It is fairly smooth over bumps and doesn't feel as harsh as one would expect in most economy cars. The Impreza also has sporty and responsive steering. Now, you pay a bit more for the performance-oriented turbocharged WRX, but the Impreza holds its own and we are really impressed.
Well-Equipped Cabin
Subaru has now given the Impreza a very generous equipment roster. Even in base trim level form it has a lot to offer, including standard Bluetooth, a rearview cam and a nice touchscreen interface. There are quite a few options to choose from as well, like leather upholstery and automatic climate control. All that makes it one of the best-equipped cars in this segment.
Spacious Seating
The Impreza may look smaller from the outside, however you'd be surprised how much passenger space there is inside. Headroom and legroom are ample, even in the back. Yes, it is technically a compact car but, when compared to the midsize Subaru Legacy, we think the Impreza has enough room for the needs of most folks.
Impressive Fuel Economy
Typically all-wheel-drive cars eat up more gas, but the continuously variable transmission Impreza returns 28 miles per gallon in the city and an impressive 37 mpg on the highway. Those are numbers smaller cars without all-wheel drive can't match. The standard all-wheel-drive Impreza has a one-up on other compact cars in its class in that it really can do it all.
Autotrader Says
Standard all-wheel drive isn't the only thing the 2016 Subaru Impreza has going for it. Get to Subaru, test drive an Impreza and see why Subaru has one of most loyal fan bases out there.
