Judith Jamison, an internationally renowned dancer who later served as artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for two decades, has passed away at the age of 81. Jamison died on Saturday after a brief illness, surrounded by close friends in New York.

Originally from Philadelphia, Jamison began her ballet training at the Judimar School of Dance at the age of six. She joined the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965 and became one of its leading soloists for 15 years. She later left to perform as a guest artist with various ballet companies and on Broadway.

Jamison returned to Alvin Ailey as artistic director, a role she held for 21 years. During her tenure, she choreographed numerous works for the theater’s repertoire, organized a 50-city global tour celebrating the theater’s 50th anniversary, and expanded Ailey’s legacy by spotlighting new choreographers. In 2004, she secured a permanent home for the theater on Manhattan’s west side, and in 2011, she transitioned to the role of artistic director emerita.

Throughout her life, Jamison remained dedicated to showcasing the power of dance to express authentic identity and cultural diversity. Through her work with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she helped create a modern dance theater that inspired audiences worldwide and offered new perspectives and experiences in the realm of performing arts.
