100 years of the newest narrow gauge power to ever hit the rails of the Denver and Rio Grande Western (sorry guys, the K-37's are built with a mis-mash of parts, so they're disqualified. Hyce, thoughts?). Built in 1925 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia Pennsylvania (fine, Eddystone, but who really knows where that is), these brutes have done everything imaginable, from pulling lumbering oil drags up the side of Cumbres, miles of pipe trains to Farmington, and pulled the famed San Juan from Durango. They've even been movie stars, cast along side Kevin Costner in 'Wyatt Earp', Willie Nelson in 'Where the Hell's That Gold', and Harrison Ford... Oh, not him, okay, River Phoenix in 'Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade'.

Join me as we tour the today's Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad as we depart from both ends at Chama, New Mexico and Antonito Colorado following these brutish centurions. These massive engines are set up to show off pulling short versions of the freights that would have frequented this line. We'll see two sections of Cumbres Turns, a rideable freight, and a mid train helper. The twisting track through the Conejos Range of the San Juan Mountains on the edge of the San Luis Valley provides a scenic back drop as we wind our way around Lava Loop and Whiplash Curve, through the portals of Mud and Rock Tunnel and tip toe our way over the Toltec Gorge and Cascade Creek Trestle.
