Diverticulitis is a serious medical condition that occurs when pouches grow in the lining of your intestine and then become inflamed. These pouches, called diverticula, develop when weak spots in your intestinal wall bulge out. Most often, such pouches grow in the large intestine, or colon.

Certain foods tend to promote the growth of inflammation in these pouches. Some foods which are normally good for digestion should be avoided when you have an episode ("flare up") of diverticulitis.

Fiber-rich foods you limit or forego, especially during a flare up, include:

Beans and legumes such as navy beans, chickpeas, lentils, and kidney beans.

Vegetables.

Fruits.

Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oats, amaranth, spelt, and bulgur.

Research suggests that a diet containing the following foods is likely to put you at a higher risk for developing diverticulitis.

Fried foods

Foods that are high in sugar and fat.

Full-fat dairy

Red meat

Refined grains

Diverticula often exist in your colon without becoming inected or inflamed: a condition known as diverticulosis. It is less serious than diverticulitis, and it becomes more common as you get older. Approximately half of Americans over age 60 have diverticulosis, and most are unaware of it..
