CHINESE SYSTEM OF MEDICINE
The history of Chinese medicine dates back 2757 BC when the first Materia Medica was written by Shennong. It contains 365 kinds of herbs.

Theory and Basic Concept
Chinese philosophy states that the body is the delicate balance of two polar and opposite antagonistic and complementary forces - Yin and Yang. Yin represents the earth and is dark feminine and passive. Yang represents the 'Heaven' and corresponds with Sun which is light, masculine and active. One of the major assumptions of concepts in Chinese medicine is that a diseased condition is due to an internal imbalance of Yin and Yang. Disease, therefore, can be treated by correcting the imbalance to bring the body back to its healthy state.

The Chinese system believes in five body constituents, five body networks and five body climates.
The five body constituents involve Qi (chi) or spirit; moisture; blood; shen or psyche; and jing (soma) or essence. The five body networks are liver, heart, spleen, lungs and kidney. Just as a nature is organised by five powers - wood, fire, earth, metal and water, the body also has five the pulsation of each wrist and by observing functional systems known as organ networks. These networks regulate and preserve Qi, moisture, blood, spirit and essence. The five body climates are considered wind, dampness, dryness, heat and cold. As natural forces cause disturbances in the nature, these five body climates can upset the balance within the human body.

Diagnosis
Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine assess a person's overall health by checking the pulsation of each wrist and by observing the form and colour of body, face and tongue Pulse examination provides a clue as regards the part of the body in which the disease has originated and also whether it is the Yin or the Yang which is disturbed. It also enables a physician to assess the curability of the ailment.
The observation is interpreted in the context of a patient's past and present symptoms, complaints, habits, physical conditions, family history and mental status.

Treatment
The overall goal of the medical treatment in this system is to adjust and harmonise Yin and Yang of the patients. This is achieved by controlling the Qi, moisture and blood in the organ networks.

The Chinese system incorporates five main ways, namely,
1. Acupuncture
2. Herbal medicine
3. Diet
4. Exercise and
5. Massage

1. Acupuncture is based on the set of channels corresponding to organ network. Acupuncture points are located in small depressions called gates in the skin, where the channel appears closest to the body surface. These gates of the body are opened or closed to adjust the circulation in the channels. Very thin, sterile, stainless steel acupuncture needles are inserted into acupuncture points (20-40 minutes) Mobilisation of Qi, moisture, blood, muscles, nerves, vessels, glands and organs occurs.
2. Herbal Medicines: The specific herbs or their combinations are used to remedise the prevailing conditions.
For example, fatigue is treated with herbs that nourish Qi. Restlessness is set by blood enriching herbs. Dry skin or dehydration is treated by using moisture replenishing herbs. Herbs also assist the organ networks to perform their activities efficiently.
3. Diet and exercise for healthy individuals or for patients suffering from imbalance in Yin and Yang is properly planned. Herbs are more like foods than drugs, which can supplement our diet and fortify our constitution as well as o prevent or remedy an ailment.
4. Massage also has its importance in Chinese medicine to set the imbalances of Yin and Yang and to harmonize the body network and body climate.
