This iconic song was written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for Pinocchio in 1940. Its recording by Cliff Edwards as Jiminy Cricket not only won an academy award for best original song, it was the first Disney song ever to win an Oscar.

George Bruns didn’t work on the music for Pinocchio, he joined the studio later in 1953 to work on the score for Sleeping Beauty (and many projects afterwards ). But this quote comes from an interview from Sept. 6, 1973 that Bob Thomas had with George Bruns while Bob was collecting information about Walt Disney for the biography he was going to write (Walt Disney: An American Original). My guess is that either Walt Disney told this fact about When You Wish Upon a Star directly to George Bruns, or else he heard about it from other musicians in the studio.
