Relationship Between Blood Pressure, Flow And Resistance:
Blood flow is equal to pressure gradient divided by resistance. Resistance in tern depends on viscosity, length of blood vessel, and radius of blood vessel. Among these parameters, blood pressure and radius of vessels are used by our body's control systems to regulate blood flow to various organs. For regulation of blood pressure, pumping by the heart is controlled. As flow is proportional to the fourth power of radius, even a small change in radius can produce large changes in blood flow. And obviously, to changes the radius, the vessels are constricted or dilated as needed.
