Resistance in Blood Flow | Hemodynamics
The factors that create resistance to blood flow are the viscosity of the blood, the length of the blood vessel, and the diameter of the vessel. The more the viscosity, the higher the resistance. The viscosity in turn, mainly depends on the hematocrit. The longer the vessel, the higher the resistance. And the "narrower" the vessel, the higher the resistance. As the vessels get narrower, the fastest-flowing streams of blood at the center are lost. So resistance is related to the fourth power of radius. In serially arranged vessels resistance is added up. And in parallelly arranged vessels the resistance decreases.
