Seeing old footage of Cliff Burton instantly transports me back to my bedroom at age 15 when a friend let me borrow “Cliff ‘Em All” and told me to “get ready”. I’ll never forget the impact it (and the album "Kill 'Em All") had on me at the time. I reluctantly gave the DVD back, and haven't seen this live performance of Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) since then. Many of you requested live footage of Cliff after I analyzed “Orion” and “The Call of Ktulu” here on the channel, so it was time to revisit and relive my nostalgia with some bass-player analysis! In this video I focus on Cliff’s attitude, character, and why WHAT he played was far less important than HOW he played it. I think his musical ideas flourished far beyond Metallica into the thrash metal scene once “Master of Puppets” released, forcing their peers to up their ante. I discuss his effects, technique, clever use of open strings, phrasing, style, and more with a ton of geeky bassist analysis!
