In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, we meet Madame Maxime. Madame Maxime is a half-giant, but that isn’t all she is. She’s also graceful, just, and beloved by her students.

But because the wizarding world thinks that giants are vicious, and blood-thirsty, she hides her true identity so that the other parts of herself can be seen.

Enter Rubeus Hagrid, who wants to love her. But part of why he wants to loves her, is because she’s a giant. And Madame Maxime balks.

We don’t blame Madame Maxime for hiding her heritage to try to escape prejudice. Sometimes, in a prejudiced world, that’s what you need to do. She’s not trying to to be political – she’s just trying to exist. But is hiding her identity a disservice to other half-giants, like Hagrid?
