In today's video, I handbuilt a textured tray with handles from a slab.
I just handbuilt these large slab trays yesterday. The one without the handles is great for sushi. The larger one with the handles will be also used for fruits, veggies and cheese tray.
1.How do you avoid warping?
I do not move it with my hands, because the clay has memory. I used two wooden boards to flip it during the handbuilding process. It's very helpful to put some weight such as rice/bean bags on the flat slab while drying slowly.
2.How did you get the corners nice and curved with no seam?
There is a little seam, but I don't really mind the seams as long as they don't crack during the drying process. (fingers crossed) The round edges are made with wet sponge and bending.
3.How to avoid the clay stick to the board/drywall when flipping it?
Baby powder or corn starch powder will help with the sticky problem. I like to use a little harder clay for handbuilding, so it's stiffer and less sticky also.
4.What slab roller do you use?
Using a slab roller machine is so much easier for my handbuilding projects. I brought Shimpo slab roller because I used to use the same machine from my local pottery community center.
5.How to make the texture on the clay?
I used silicone cake fondant mat for making the texture.
