In Lecture 8D (St. John of Damascus, On the Orthodox Faith, Chapter 8) we push into the final section of the chapter and bring together two big ideas that people constantly confuse when talking about the Trinity:

1) Why the Trinity is not “three gods”

St. John contrasts how created things (like Peter vs Paul) are actually separated—by time, space, and a long list of distinguishing features—while their unity (shared human nature) is often something we recognize “in thought.”
But with the Holy Trinity, it’s the reverse: the oneness is not a mental shortcut. It’s actual—because the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are co-eternal, consubstantial, and share one divine will, one operation, one power, and one motion/energy. The distinction is real, but it’s known by the personal properties: unbegotten (Father), begotten (Son), and procession (Spirit).

We also tie this directly to perichoresis (mutual indwelling) and show how Scripture supports it (especially in the way Christ speaks about being “in the Father” and the Spirit’s relation to God).

2) The “counting method” problem (identity vs division)

A major challenge people raise is: “Do you count God as one or three?”
This lecture shows why that question often hides a false dichotomy, because human counting isn’t always done the same way. We walk through:

Counting by identity (the kind of counting people assume is the only way)

Counting by division/measure (used for things like sand, water, clouds—where strict identity boundaries get blurry)

Then we apply the insight correctly: God is not a creature, not an abstract object, and not a pile of parts—so you don’t force God into creaturely counting categories. Instead, you keep the categories straight:

One God with respect to essence/nature

Three with respect to Persons/hypostases

We briefly connect this to the broader philosophical issue of “the one and the many” and explain why these category mistakes show up in many debates, especially when people collapse nature vs person (or essential vs hypostatic properties).
