In this lecture we begin Chapter 9 of St. John of Damascus (On the Orthodox Faith), where he opens with a blunt claim: “The divinity is simple and uncompounded.” That single paragraph is short—but it’s packed with metaphysics, and it’s one of the biggest points of confusion in inter-Christian debate (especially East/West conversations).

What we cover:

1) Divine simplicity (basic definition)
We clarify what “simple” means in classical theology: God is not composed of parts or principles—not physical parts, not metaphysical building-blocks, not a being assembled out of separable features.

2) Actus Purus and why people bring it up:
We explain why “pure act” language shows up in scholastic frameworks: it’s meant to protect God’s immutability (no passive potentiality, no becoming).

3) Divine simplicity vs Absolute Divine Simplicity (ADS)
We distinguish the general claim “God is non-composite” from the stronger scholastic formulation often called absolute divine simplicity, where God’s attributes are treated as identical with the divine essence in a very strict way.

4) Real vs virtual distinctions (and why everyone talks past each other)
We give a bird’s-eye introduction to:
Real distinctions (a difference in the thing itself)
Virtual/conceptual distinctions (a distinction grounded in reality but “carried” by our concepts and the way effects are received)
We use familiar examples to make this intuitive:
Sun + wax/clay (same source, different effects in recipients)
Mercy vs wrath (one unchanging God, different reception depending on repentance)

5) Orthodox framing: essence, persons, energies
We explain the Eastern approach: maintaining God’s simplicity without collapsing everything into the same “thing,” by distinguishing essence, hypostases (Persons), and energies—while insisting that distinction does not entail composition.

6) Why St. John says divine names don’t define God’s essence
St. John categorizes divine names as:
Apophatic/negative (what God is not: uncreated, invisible, without beginning…)
Consequential/attributive (good, just, holy…)
Relational (Lord, King, Creator—names based on God’s relation to creation)
Goal of the lecture

This is meant as a charitable bridge for interdenominational conversation: enough scholastic vocabulary to understand Catholic/Western categories, and enough Orthodox grounding to avoid category mistakes—especially confusing how God is named/known with what God is in essence.
