The Aussie Fisherman Greg, setting up a new crabpot the way a professional does. If you will find it will catch better and less trouble with the law.
The first thing is to buy good quality crabpots. The first things I look for are. 1. The crabpot has thick mesh. The sowing on the joints has good knots because some crabpots I have brought in the knots would let go, and I would have to go a quick repair on the water. The meshes are tight. The crab legs don't hook up as much. The thin mesh on the cheap pots is a big problem.
I like at least 10 mm rings on the pots. Which helps keep the crabpot on the bottom of the ocean. Which is very important so the crabs can get into the pot.
I like to tie my crabpot to a solid mangrove tree. So they don't wash away. Some people buy cheap crabpots, and if they lose them, they don't bother to go and find them they just buy some more next time. The problem with that is that the lost m crabpots turned into gost pots and kept killing fish and crabs for years. That's why if you buy quality crabpots, you probably have a good look for them at low tide if possible.
Using a pot plant tray to protect your mullet or what ever bait you are using, from the crabs eating the bait from the outside, they will not go into the pot if they can get a free feed on the outside.
Erecting a crabpot used to be a hard job. But now, with these spreaders, it is so easy.
Using an electric soldering iron to mark the name tag and float is a lot better way than a marking pen.
Using sink rope to secure your crabpot is one of the most important things you need to do when chasing mudcrabs. The rope doesn't float, which is a good thing. The ropes that float are a big problem because people can run into them while motoring up the creek. They get around the propeller and could easily stop the boat quickly and throw people over board. If that happens here in Northqueensland, where I crab, you not only worry about drowning. You may have to fight off a big crocodile. The other really important thing is that the floating ropes can kill endangered species like turtles when they tangled the rope around their flippers
Hope this video helps you with your crabbing. I will be doing more like this in the future.
