In this video I answer a question sent in my a channel regular.
Mudit asks about French Contrast Training, Complex and Contrast Training and the work of Cal Dietz and his Triphasic method.
He also wants to know which I prefer and what I think of the Triphasic method and Cal’s work. So Mudit set me quite a bit of work too!
In the video I explain what FCT and Complex and Contrast Training are and also talk a little bit about the Triphasic method and my understanding of it.
I’ll not write a lot here as my explanations are in the video.

What I will say now is that the three methods are all used to increase power, speed and reactiveness. (You could also use them to develop speed endurance if you increase reps and reduced recovery and loadings).
Basically all the methods try to create a situation where the body is forced to produce increased force (excuse the pun).
The mechanisms behind this are largely neural. The athlete is subjected to activities which require a very high neural input and this stimulates power production through fast twitch muscle fibres and the motor units which activate them.
You - the athlete - need to be fired up and really challenged to produce the power and speed required (this particularly applies to FCT and Complex and Contrast Training … the Triphasic Method and training isomtrically an eccentriclly has more to it).
Potentiation is another key aspect of these methods. I have made a number of videos on this subject in the past and more recently - so do go and check those out. (See below for an example.)
In terms of my opinions on FCT and the Triphasic Method - you’ll have to watch the video!
Hopefully I do explain what my preferences are (born from experience and experimentation), how I power train my jumpers and sprinters and how I fit this type of training into my workouts and my plans. So, hopefully all the information I provide will be of use to you. Do let me know.
