In some Indian cities, traffic police have come up with a creative way to deal with excessive honking. At busy junctions, traffic signals are fitted with special decibel meters that measure noise levels. If the honking gets too loud, the red light timer resets, and everyone has to wait longer.

The idea is simple: the louder people honk, the longer they are stuck at the signal. This acts as a punishment for unnecessary noise and teaches drivers to be more patient on the road. Instead of just putting up “No Honking” signs, the system forces people to actually change their behavior.

This experiment first gained attention in Mumbai and was later tried in other cities like Bengaluru. These are places where noise levels at signals often cross safe limits, sometimes going above 100 decibels. By linking honking to longer wait times, officials hope to reduce noise pollution and make the roads calmer.

While many people find the idea smart and even funny, experts point out that honking is often a result of traffic congestion and driver frustration. So while the system can reduce noise at certain junctions, it may not solve the larger problem of traffic mismanagement. Still, it’s an innovative step toward building awareness about noise pollution in Indian cities.
