SELF ARREST with TREKKING POLES [could save your life]

On a high alpine tour in the Swiss Alps recently we did not expect to run into several summer snow banks. There was a large amount of late season snow in the Swiss alps and we didn’t really take that into account in our gear selection, meaning we did not have micro spikes when they were very much needed to get across safely.

We all managed to get across but it was very near fatal for one of these guys when we slipped and fell into a crevasse.

This was absolutely my fault as I didn’t clearly explain to him how to cross safety and self arrest beforehand. This could have easily killed a good friend of mine…

The seconds where he was in an uncontrolled slide heading towards the crevasse was some of the longest and scariest seconds of my life and I have big regrets about that.

Even though I wasn’t the “trip leader” I should have taken a more prominent role in teaching and leading in this case and it was a big lesson and a close call that I will not soon forget.
