On 13 January, Taiwan held its presidential election. The chief contenders were from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the largest opposition party Kuomintang (KMT), and the emerging Taiwan People’s Party(TPP). The DPP presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Lai Ching-Te and Hsiao Bi-khim won the election with 5.58 million votes -- nearly one million more votes than runners-up from the KMT.
Before Lai's victory, no party had ever held the presidency for more than eight consecutive years. What led to the DPP’s unprecedented win? What issues are Taiwanese voters most concerned about?
Given that Lai has described himself as a pragmatic advocate for Taiwanese independence, how are cross-strait relations expected to develop under his presidency? And what impact will the extended governance of the DPP have on geopolitics in Asia and Southeast Asia?
