There will be a separate evening event at the FCCT, from 6.30pm, featuring the launch of the World Press Freedom Index 2024 by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and a panel discussion with regional journalists. All welcome.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, 3 May, the FCCT will host a public seminar on the topic: “Media freedom in Thailand post-election amidst environmental crisis, and the path towards anti-SLAPP Law.” The event is co-organized by the non-profit independent online newspaper Prachatai (ประชาไท, which means literally 'free people'), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF).
The panel discussion will address the state of the information ecosystem and press freedom in Thailand over the past 12 months since the May 2023 general elections, including trends in news suppression and censorship, as well as progress towards legislation to address the problem of Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) cases.
The session also will link to the 2024 global theme for World Press Freedom Day “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis.”
Since 1993, World Press Freedom Day is commemorated globally on 3 May to raise awareness on the importance of media freedom for sustainable development and the exercise of all other human rights, as well as to remind governments of their commitment to uphold the right to freedom of expression as enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Opening remarks: UNESCO and UNEP representatives.
Keynote speech: Aleksandra Bielakowska, advocacy manager, Asia-Pacific bureau, Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF).
Panelists:
Anna Lawattanatrakul, Prachatai and PFMSea.
Thitipan Pattanamongkol, editor, The Public Dreams of Anti Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP).
