Welcome to Scared of Beautiful! In this Storytime video, I chronicle the story of my pregnancy, labor and delivery, and the devastating complications that lead to me giving birth prematurely to a stillborn son. At 23 weeks of pregnancy, I was diagnose with HELLP Syndrome, a somewhat rare condition that only occurs in pregnant women. HELLP is a liver and blood condition that can occur on its own or after the onset of preeclampsia. HELLP is an acronym and it stands for the following: H - Hemolysis (your red blood cells are breaking down), EL - Elevated liver enzymes (your liver isn't functioning correctly) and LP - Low Platelets (your body is running low on platelets and platelets are used in your blood to allow for proper clotting). Some symptoms of HELLP Syndrome include: headaches, nausea, vomiting, swelling of the extremities, upper and mid back and flank pain, fatigue, malaise, etc.
On February 21, 2015, I went to the emergency room because of extreme back pain and fatigue. After my vitals were checked and a subsequent battery of tests, I was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome. Because my vitals were rapidly declining, my doctor began the task of inducing my labor and on February 23, 2015, I delivered my sweet baby boy, Jace Plez. In my State, 23 weeks is considered a person, so we completed birth and death certificates. Baby Jace was cremated and then we chose to bury his ashes at a graveside service in my home town.
This experience was the hardest thing I have ever had happen to me in my life. I know that there was nothing that I did wrong, but it still feels like I failed my baby. I still grieve him. I know that God will bless me with another child in His own due time and season.
I share this story in the hopes that it helps other women. We are strong and able to conquer anything. If you or a loved one has dealt with infant loss, miscarriage, infertility, high risk pregnancy, endometriosis, PCOS, or any other issue dealing with the female reproductive system, PLEASE know that you are NOT alone. We can help each other by being supportive and using our voices as resources.
