The Vythiri police apprehended six students, from the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Pookode in Wayanad on February 28 for their alleged involvement in the demise of a second year Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry student, J.S. Siddharth, aged 20. Siddharth was discovered deceased by hanging in the hostel bathroom at the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University campus on February 18.

The detained individuals include Billgate Joshua from Sulthan Bathery, S. Abhishekh from Idukki, Donsdai from Thodupuzha as Rahna Binoy, S.D. Akash and R.D. Sreehari from Thiruvananthapuram. All students at the college. Authorities arrested them under Sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act.

Initially treated as a death case by law enforcement a subsequent investigation resulted in charges being brought against twelve individuals for multiple offenses like abetment of suicide, wrongful restraint and inflicting injuries with dangerous weapons or methods. Under both IPC provisions and the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act.
The university had suspended these accused students from both activities and residence following this incident. According to police reports these individuals had been evading authorities after the occurrence.

In a statement to reporters Siddharths father Jayaprakash alleged that his son met his end due to purported actions, by local leaders and activists associated with SFI who were also enrolled at that same educational institution.
Based on the report it was found that his son had injuries and had not eaten for 2 3 days indicating a lack of food intake as mentioned by Mr. Jayaprkash.
Mr. Jayaprkash mentioned that he learned his son was subjected to ragging and physical abuse.
He expressed concerns, about interference due to the involvement of SFI activists and local leaders suggesting that their political party might shield the accused individuals from consequences.
Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan raised allegations in the Assembly claiming that the perpetrators were affiliated with SFI and were responsible for causing injuries to the student. However SFI has refuted these accusations.
In response to these events Youth Congress organized a protest march, to Vythiri police station demanding the arrest of those. The accused individuals have been placed in custody for a period of 14 days.
