These two exceptionally rare scrolls have been rediscovered after nearly a century out of the public eye. They were originally part of a set of ten paintings inspired by the works of renowned poet Fan Chengda and date to the early Qianlong reign. Of the ten original paintings one is now lost, seven are in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei, and the remaining two scrolls are offered here by Sotheby's in the upcoming sale Fine Classical Chinese Paintings (19 April | Hong Kong). Shen Yuan’s Poetic Idea of “Song on the Lantern Fair” and Li Shizhuo's Poetic Idea of “Song on the Headcount Congee” are both fantastic examples of literati art and their survival is testament to their importance.
