Navigating The Kimberley: Purnululu, Spoiler Alert Wildfires & Outback Challenges | Half Lap of Australia: Episode 8 🌟🚐

Welcome back to our Half Lap of Australia series! In this episode, join us—Megan, Stuey, Evelyn, and Thea—as we navigate what was easily the hardest 48 hours of our journey through The Kimberley. They say trouble comes in threes, and this leg of the trip put that to the test.

Day 22:
After a relaxing morning at Zebedee Springs, our journey takes a sharp turn as trouble begins to strike. First, a truck flicks a stone that cracks our windscreen—a serious issue in one of the most remote parts of Australia. But the challenges don’t stop there. As we make the rugged 4WD drive into Purnululu National Park, home of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bungle Bungles, Stu’s parents face a power issue with their camper, forcing them to return to Hall’s Creek. Despite these setbacks, we make it to Kungkalanayi Lookout and catch a stunning sunset at Walardi Campground.

Day 23:
The infamous Day 23 begins before sunrise, with ambitious plans to explore the Bungle Bungles. We tackle the hike through Piccaninny Creek and the iconic Cathedral Gorge, though the heat and our daughters' reluctance slow us down. Megan takes on the class 4-5 walk to Echidna Chasm solo, capturing breathtaking views. As we attempt to leave the National Park and reach Mary Pool before sunset, we’re confronted by growing wildfires, forcing us to make tough decisions on the fly. The day ends with a race against time, navigating through smoke and darkness to reach Fitzroy Crossing just as the road is about to close. Thankfully, we find refuge at Ellendale Rest Area.

Day 24:
After the intensity of the previous days, we take a well-deserved break as we drive the final stretch to Broome. The day is spent washing off the Kimberley dust and relaxing by the pool at Seashells Broome, finally allowing ourselves to breathe after a chaotic adventure.

Next Episode:
Join us as we recover in Broome before setting off down the stunning Western coastline.
