System Archetypes | Systems Thinking for Social Changemakers (part 3)

Systems thinking can be a powerful tool for enacting social change. Causal loop diagrams and system archetypes are two valuable tools for understanding the complex networks, feedback loops, and underlying solutions needed to create positive social change. Causal loop diagrams help us visualize and analyze how all elements within any given system work together to influence each other over time; this allows us to increase our awareness of potential unintended consequences of any proposed changes we may make. System archetypes help us identify patterns of behavior and causes of systems level problems so that informed interventions can be made. By combining these two methods with other systemic learning techniques such as dialogue, visioning, and values clarification, it is possible to leverage insights from systems thinking to create positive social transformation.
