The Iceberg Model | Systems Thinking for Social Changemakers (part 2)

The iceberg model is an incredibly useful tool to have when utilizing systems thinking for social change. Often, the most obvious elements of a system are visible and above the surface, but what lies beneath them can be far more complex and difficult to grapple with. By using the iceberg model to analyze a system, we are able to get a much more comprehensive view of any given situation and better formulate our solutions in order to make meaningful lasting changes. Systems thinking requires taking into account countless variables and influences on a given system, and exhausting all potential solutions–the use of an iceberg model helps us do just that, by providing us access to deeper layers of information that were previously out of sight. In this way, it gives us greater insight than ever before into understanding how best to create sustainable positive change.
