Описание к видео Basel City Tour | Switzerland 🇨🇭

Basel, situated in northern Switzerland where the Rhine River meets the French, German, and Swiss borders, is the capital of the Halbkanton (demicanton) of Basel-Stadt. Originally settled by the Celtic Rauraci tribe, it gained significance with the establishment of a Roman fortification known as Basilia in 374 CE. By the early 5th century, it became the seat of the bishop of Augusta Raurica. Notably, Basel's university, the first in Switzerland, was founded in 1460 during the Ecumenical Council (1431–49), presided over by Pope Pius II. The city joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501 and became a hub of humanism and the Protestant Reformation in Switzerland, with Desiderius Erasmus teaching at its university from 1521 to 1529. Subsequently, the Counter-Reformation attracted skilled refugees from across Europe, and by the 18th century, political power rested with the trade guilds. In 1831, the rural part of the canton rebelled, leading to the declaration of independence the following year. In 1833, the canton was reorganized into Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt, with the city forming the latter.
