The Turks became a powerful force after the decline of the Abbasids. The Turks established the two major kingdoms of Ghazni and Ghor. He was interested in wealth rather than setting up an empire in the Indian subcontinent. Mahmud needed a lot of money to organise a well-equipped army, in order to fulfil his desire of conquering Central Asia. He attacked India to plunder wealth.

The weak political condition of India attracted him most. As he did not face any tough resistance from the Indian side, he carried on 17 attacks on India one after the other from CE 1001 to CE 1025. His cavalry played a great role in the victory. He invaded and plundered the cities and temple towns such as Multan, Alwar, Mathura, Nagarkot (Nepal), Thaneshwar (Thanesar in Haryana) and Somnath. The plunder of the Somnath Temple (CE 1025) brought him immense wealth.

The successors of Mahmud were engaged in endless wars in Central Asia after his death. Muhammad Ghori, ruler of a small kingdom, conquered Ghazni in CE 1173.
After 150 years of Mahmud's invasions Muhammad of Ghor (hence called Ghori) attacked India. At the time of his invasion five Rajput kingdoms were in power 'They were the Rathors of Kanauj, Solankis of Gujarat, Chandelas of Bundelkhand, Parmars of Malwa and Chauhans of Delhi and Ajmer. He defeated the Solankis there. He also captured Punjab, Peshawar and Sialkot.
