Biggest Killer of Baby Chicks and How to Prevent It

Raising baby chicks and setting up a chick brooder is one of the funnest parts of raising backyard chickens. Losing and having a baby chick die is one of the saddest. One of the biggest reasons we see far too often every year and would like to spread awareness is that baby chicks can easily drown in their water. The common chick waterer sold for chicks is actually far too large for just hatched very young baby chicks and they can easily drown or get chilled by falling in it. We use a Quail Waterer instead! Bonus points for the small rim being easier to clean and staying far cleaner with less bedding being able to fall into them. We have always used these and have never lost a chick to drowning, we hope we can prevent some losses.
