1968年に登場したXJシリーズの2代目であるXJ40のボディに、12気筒エンジンを搭載したのが、XJ81シリーズである。
オールアルミブロックのV型12気筒SOHCエンジンは、XJシリーズ最大である6Lの排気量から、最高出力 315ps(232kW)/5350rpm、最大トルク 48.7kg・m(477.6N・m)/2850rpmを発揮した。

The XJ81 series is a 12-cylinder engine mounted on the body of the XJ40, the second generation of the XJ series that appeared in 1968.

The all-aluminum block V-type 12-cylinder SOHC engine produced a maximum output of 315ps (232kW) / 5350rpm and a maximum torque of 48.7kg · m (477.6N · m) / 2850rpm from the XJ series maximum displacement of 6L.
