Cat stance (or xu bu) is a fundamental position in many martial arts and forms part of basic Kung Fu training. This position has shown up in a few of my home workout videos, so this this video is aimed at guiding you on how to perform this stance properly.

Cat stance in Kung Fu is a challenging position which will really test and improve your strength. Done incorrectly though, it can lead strain on your joints which will eventually manifest as injuries.

You will learn the proper foot position, knee position, how low you should go, how upright your body should be, and what the proper distribution of your weight is. I will also talk you through what this stance is used for and why it is known as both cat stance, and empty stance.

Finally I will demonstrate some exercises/ training techniques to help you strengthen your stance, allowing you to get lower and hold the stance for longer.

This position is also known as Xuan Ji Bu in Mandarin. This translates as false leg stance, again because of the empty front leg. In Japanese it is called Nekoashi-Dachi and tends to be performed slightly higher in Karate than in Kung Fu. The same principles of good alignment remain though, so as to not compromise your joints, and utilise the different muscles of your body appropriately.
