A cholera epidemic broke out at the beginning of the year in the province of Tshopo (DRC) and spread down along the river Congo, the country's main transport connection. With the MSF emergency team of the Pool d'Urgence Congo (PUC), MSF first intervened on early March in Basoko, northwest of Kisangani, setting up a Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) with 30 beds, two Cholera Treatment Units and several rehydration points. In total, nearly 1,000 patients were supported in over two months.

In April, the epidemic reached Bumba, in the Mongala region, the PUC intervened, treating more than 300 patients. Just a month after, MSF initiated activities throughout the province of Ecuador, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

The teams of the PUC took in charge a CTC providing 30 beds in Mbandaka, they conducted outreach activities in the region and also managed three care units and twenty rehydration points in the province. More than 520 persons have been supported so far. MSF continues its activities in the region of Equateur where new cases are reported and is monitoring the rest of the country.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare.
