Marceline was introduced to death very early on in life. Her mother died in a crash when she was only ten, and she was confronted by the reality that everyone and everything dies. Though the idea of Lightrins (this words deities) brought comfort for a while, she began to doubt even their mercy.
She accepted death quickly, a side effect from her father- he was negligent, forced her into hobbies she didn’t want but that her mother did, and favored her younger sister, Ashlyn. She decided that, when she did die, at least she’d be free.
Then she was told that the condition she had since birth was terminal when she was twelve It was almost a relief.
Her father refused to Ashlyn what was happening, so she took matters into her own hands. She decided that hiding the truth of death with her - like he had their mother - would only cause more fear in Ashlyn when she later found out about death. This created an even bigger rift between Marceline and her father.
Then, she died and found a way to escape the afterlife. To just hang out with her friends. Never to see her family.
