In this 3ds Max & TyFlow tutorial I'll show you how to create a knitting / stitching simulation using basic splines that are arranged in a knit pattern. I'll first start off with ways to create hatched thread patterns using MCG SimpleWeave (http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/mcg...)

And then we can use a tyFlow simulation to create splines using a tysplines operator set to trajectory mode with a force operator. Alternatively you can use a plane object that is converted into splines using the tyMeshToSplines TyFlow Modifier as your starting splines for the final tyflow weave simulation. You could do this manually of course - but this way helps make it more non-destructive and provides a procedural modeling workflow.

Once we have splines that are arranged into a weaved pattern, we can put them into our knitting tyflow simulation and use a surface test to move the spline particles into a secondary event when it collides with the particles - then we can use a force operator and a surface force operator to have the threads fly away.

By exporting this simulation as tycache splines, we can use the retimer option on the tycache to reverse the keyframes, so that the threads start off unweaved - and then knit together in the final pattern. You could also just reverse the frames in After Effects, but this way you have more control if you have other animated elements in your scene. There are lots of ways to add variation to this simulation - like optionally using a texture map as the trigger, or changing the location or shape of our surface test object - but it just takes some trial and error. Lastly, everything was rendered out using VRay 6 and composited together using After Effects.
