British voters go to the polls on May 3rd 1979 in general
elections that may prove the most significant for
decades. The outgoing Labour government of Premier
Jim Callaghan is said to be moving progressively to the
far Left; the Conservative opposition led by Margaret
Thatcher is promising new rewards for individual
enterprise, and attacking the influence of the Labour
unions. If the Conservatives win, Mrs Thatcher would
become the first-ever woman Premier in Europe.
