Seeing a broken blood vessel in the white of your eye can be alarming. Yet it's actually a common, minor occurrence and will almost always heal on its own. Usually, no treatment is needed and there is no way to remove the blood or speed up healing. If the broken blood vessel does not affect vision and is not causing pain, it most likely is harmless. If you have recurring or excessive subconjunctival hemorrhages, you should make an appointment with your ophthalmologist to examine your eyes, assess your risk factors and order appropriate tests, if needed, notes Robert Melendez, MD, of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
