How do you treat a broken blood vessel in your eye? What actually causes a subconjunctival hemorrhage or solid bloodshot eyes?

WHAT IS DISCUSSED IN THIS VIDEO:
The appearance of a bloody eye can be scary. It's common to get an emergency call to the office to been seen for blood in the eye. This broken blood vessel is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage and be common. Dr. Guymon goes over the top causes of a broken blood vessel in the eye.

Don't worry, a broke blood vessel isn't sight threatening, but you do want to get it checked by your eye doctor to rule certain causes out.

Causes talked about: trauma, high blood pressure (hypertension), bleeding disorders, taking blood thinner medications, eye surgery, valsalva or increased strain pressure to the eye, and most commonly idiopathic.

What Treatment is available for a broken blood vessel? Time. A subconjunctival hemorrhage is benign and will resolve on it's own within 2-3 weeks on average. You can use artificial tears to help with the irritation if there is any.
