Reporting car accidents in Massachusetts. Filing a police report. Do you have to do it? Do I need to file it? The answer generally is yes. I mean, if it's a fender bender, you take some pictures and exchange some information. Maybe not if it's below a certain threshold dollar value. But if there's an accident, a serious accident, where there's a lot of property damage, a lot of vehicle damage, somebody's injured, or likely injured, you gotta report it.

I had a conversation with a client this morning and she told me the story of someone in her family who didn't report it, and there was all this concern and confusion and worry, lots of worry and when this young man finally did report it, they went to the police station and they looked and they had a cam, you know, a dash cam, and it was crystal clear that when he changed lanes, there was no way that it was his fault for getting in this accident.

He thought it might have been his fault. So it helped in that instance, number one, to report it and number two to have a dashcam, but it was the right thing to do. Report an accident when it happens. Call the police, fill out an accident report, and a collision report for your insurance company.

Do it the right way. If you don't, you're going to get caught sooner or later and it's going to go against you. When a serious accident happens, you don't want to be known in the insurance system or in the police system as someone who is disingenuous, as someone who is dishonest, as someone who has failed to report things before, as someone who has tried to get things to slide through.

It's not going to help you when it really matters. If you're able to report it, report it. Get it over with, get it done, do the right thing.
