The Haunting Psychology of A24's PEARL

Beware, all the spoilers for Pearl and some spoilers for X!

This is a video essay on the A24 movie, Pearl (2022), directed by Ti West and starring Mia Goth. In this video I explore the character of Pearl, what makes us relate to her psychotic breakdowns and the deeper meaning and philosophy behind the dramatic horror movie. I begin by exploring A24's X (2022), the movie that Pearl is a prequel to and that first introduced us to Pearl's character as a very old and very disturbed slasher villain living with her husband Howard on a Texas farm. I dive into Pearl's rivalry with the character Maxine (also played by Mia Goth) and how their dynamic relates to what we eventually learn about Pearl's youthful days in her film's plot.

From there, I dive deep into the psychology of Pearl and deconstruct how this technicolor story somehow makes us see ourselves in a psychotic murderer. There's a beautiful tragedy to Pearl with a criminally low amount of video essays diving into the depth of this movie, so I decided to do it myself.
