How to Compress Drum Overheads - Tricks for Setting the Attack and Release

Compressing drum overheads can be difficult if you don't know what to listen for, and it certain can mess up a mix if you over compress. In this episode, we talk about compressing drum overhead microphones and how to listen to the drums to know that you are setting the attack and release the best you can for your mixes.

All mixes are different and some of these ideas will not work with everything. There are no hard fast rules. However, I often like to listen out for the snare drum and the cymbal sustain when setting the compression for drum overheads.

The snare drum allows us to hear how the compression is affecting the attack or transient of the drums.

The cymbals allow us to hear how the compressor is affecting the release of the compressor.
